835 file viewer
Open any X12 835 electronic remittance advice and read it like an EOB: payments, claims, service lines, CARC/RARC codes and patient responsibility. Free, private, nothing uploaded.
Read an 835 without a clearinghouse login
Raw 835 files look like CLP*PCN1001*1*250*110.46*28.18*MB*…~. Remitgrid turns them into a readable remittance: one row per payment (check or EFT), one row per claim, and every service line with its billed, allowed and paid amounts and each adjustment's group and reason code.
What you see
- Payer, payee, check/EFT trace number, payment date and method.
- Every claim: patient, your claim number, payer claim number, status (primary, secondary, denied, reversal), billed, paid and patient responsibility.
- Service lines with CPT/HCPCS or revenue codes, modifiers, units and dates.
- CARC adjustments (CO, PR, OA, PI) and RARC remarks with plain-English summaries.
- Provider-level adjustments (PLB) such as recoupments, interest and forward balances.
Balancing checks on every file
- Each service line: billed − adjustments = paid.
- Each claim: billed − all claim and line adjustments = paid.
- Each payment: sum of claims paid − provider-level adjustments (PLB) = the check or EFT amount in BPR02.
- Envelope: segment counts and control numbers in SE, GE and IEA.
Anything that doesn't add up is marked UNVERIFIED with the exact difference, so you know before you post it.
Private by design
An 835 is full of protected health information — patient names, member IDs, dates of service and procedure codes. Remitgrid reads the file with JavaScript in your browser tab. The contents are never uploaded, logged or stored, and nothing is saved when you close the tab. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools (Network tab), or disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep working.
Free vs Pro
Viewing and balancing checks are free for any file size. Claims and service-line CSVs and printing are free for files up to 50 claims. Pro adds unlimited claims, several files at once, the Excel workbook and the denials worklist.
How it works
- Download the 835 (ERA) from your clearinghouse, payer portal or practice-management system.
- Drop it here. Payments, claims and lines appear instantly, with balancing checks and denials flagged.
- Export claims or service lines to CSV, print a readable remit, or (Pro) download the Excel workbook and denials worklist.
FAQ
Is my 835 uploaded?
No. The file is read by JavaScript running in your browser tab; its contents — patient names, member IDs, claims — are never sent over the network or stored. You can verify this in your browser's developer tools (Network tab), or go offline after the page loads.
Is it HIPAA compliant?
Remitgrid never receives, stores or transmits your files, so no PHI reaches us. HIPAA compliance depends on how your organization handles the files and anything you download — use approved devices and storage, and check with your privacy or compliance officer.
Which files work?
X12 835 health care claim payment/advice files (version 005010X221A1 and most older ones), usually named .835, .edi, .txt, .era or .x12. Files with several payments, any delimiters, and with or without line breaks are supported. 837, 277 and 999 files are recognised and politely refused.
What do the balancing checks do?
For every service line, claim and payment, Remitgrid checks that billed − adjustments = paid, and that claims paid − provider-level adjustments = the check or EFT amount. It also checks segment counts and control numbers. Anything that doesn't add up is marked UNVERIFIED.
Are the code descriptions official?
No. They are short plain-English summaries written by Remitgrid. The official CARC and RARC wording is published by X12 at x12.org/codes, and payers apply codes according to their own policies.
What's free?
Viewing any 835 of any size, the balancing checks, denials view and reason summary are free. Claims and service-line CSVs and printing are free for files up to 50 claims. Pro removes the limit, opens many files at once, and adds the Excel workbook, denials worklist, adjustments and patient-balance CSVs.
