ERA vs EOB: what's the difference?
An EOB (explanation of benefits, or provider remittance advice) is the human-readable statement a payer sends with a payment. An ERA is the same information as an X12 835 file that software can post automatically.
Side by side
- Format — EOB: paper or PDF. ERA: a structured text file.
- Posting — EOB: keyed by hand. ERA: auto-posted by your practice-management system.
- Codes — both use CARC group/reason codes and RARC remarks.
- Payment — ERAs usually pair with EFT; the TRN trace number matches the deposit.
When you need to read the raw ERA
Auto-posting failed, the PM system shows a summary only, you changed billing companies, or you're auditing a payer's recoupments. Open the 835 in Remitgrid to see it as a readable remit, check that it balances, and print or export it.
